The cleaning is the first important job in the hospital, and I love the job and I support anyone to come work at Maine Med. And the housekeeping is the best. Housekeeping sounds very simple yet it is pretty complicated and our training program does a great job at highlighting those minor details.

We were trained how to be ready. First off, we start to protect ourselves by putting on gloves, goggles and gowns. Then we put the chemicals in the right places and include mops and rags then we don’t forget our trash bags, hand sanitizers, soaps and other supplies we need to clean the rooms.
The housekeepers here are trained for the Ten Step Cleaning which is the steps that we take to clean inside of a patient’s room. The first step is to say hello and introduce yourself to the patient upon entering the room. Second pull the trash in the linen. Third high dust. Fourth damp wipe. Fifth spot clean the walls. Six clean the bathroom Seventh dust mop. Eighth inspect the room Ninth mop the floor And tenth smile and tell the patient you are finished.

It’s prevention best practice so that we don’t cross contaminate the room or bring germs into an area that was clean so it’s the process we’re gonna follow whether we’re doing a daily clean whether we’re doing a checkout or discharge clean and we also follow that same ten step cleaning process in isolation or precaution room and those are rooms where the staff are going to wear PPE or personal protective equipment when they’re in the room so that they don’t come in contact with germs that they could not only get on themselves but they could transport around the rest of the facility so they’re gonna follow the same ten step cleaning in those rooms as well.
